Good Eating? Beef Jerky, Stuffed Olives and Spray Cheese Would Count As Staples for Food Stamp Recipients Under Trump Proposal
In what one may expect from an administration headed by someone who’s tried to make haute cuisine out of McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s and has an apparent love affair with KFC, the Trump administration is proposing adding “foods” like spray-can cheese, beef jerky and stuffed olives to the list of nutritious…

Jury Recommends Death In Ambush Killing Of Police Officers
INDIO, Calif. (AP) — A jury on Thursday recommended death for a man convicted of killing two Southern California police officers and wounding six others in an ambush-style attack in 2016, prosecutors said.
The same jury that convicted 28-year-old John Hernandez Felix of murder and attempted murder earlier this month recommended capital punishment, according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
He’ll be sentenced by a judge on Aug. 30.
Palm Springs Officers Lesley Zerebny and Jose “Gil” Vega were killed responding to a call about domestic violence at the home of Felix’s mother on Oct. 8, 2016. Prosecutors said Felix opened fire with an AR-15 rifle.
Six other officers were injured as police and Felix exchanged gunfire in the neighborhood more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. Felix was arrested after a lengthy standoff.
“We are gratified with the jury’s verdict and this represents a step toward justice for these two fallen officers,” District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in a statement Thursday.
Defense attorney John Dolan has contended Felix, an admitted gang member, is intellectually disabled and should not face capital punishment.
Dolan didn’t immediately comment on Thursday’s jury recommendation.
Gov. Gavin Newsom earlier this year announced a moratorium on enforcing the death penalty but the decision does not prevent prosecutors from seeking or judges and juries from imposing death sentences.
Vega, a father of eight, was a 35-year veteran months away from retirement when he was killed. He wasn’t scheduled to work the day he died but had volunteered to fill the shift.
Zerebny was a rookie officer just back from maternity leave.

R. Kelly Faces 11 New Sex Crime Charges In Chicago
On Thursday, Cook County prosecutors filed a new series of sexual assault charges against R. Kelly. 11 new felony counts were filed against the singer, including charges that carry a potential sentence of up top 30 years in prison.
They are believed to be the most serious charges he’s faced yet.
The alleged offenses took place in January 2010 and while the charging document does not contain many details, they also may not involve a new victim. The initials of the victim in the latest case against Kelly are the same as one of the victims in the case that Kelly was charged with earlier this year.
The new case charges the singer with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, two counts of criminal sexual assault by force, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against a victim between the ages of 13 to 16.
Kelly is currently free on $1 million bond. He’s set to appear in court on the new case on June 6.
“We’ll see what the charges are, and we’ll proceed accordingly,” Kelly’s lawyer, Steve Greenberg said. “I know this much: it’s old. They’re allegations from years ago.”

Dwyane Wade Was Introduced To Gabrielle Union With Jackee Harry’s Help: “It Might Have Been Love At First Sight”
We have Jackée Harry to thank for Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade‘s love story.
According to the 62-year-old actress, she helped him meet and eventually work his charm on Union years ago.
“I introduced Dwyane Wade to Gabrielle Union,” she told PEOPLE.
When asked if she felt there was chemistry between them, she said she felt it “immediately.”
It was sparks. It was instant,” she said. “I think it might have been love at first sight.”
They weren’t the first big Hollywood couple that Harry helped to get together, though. She also shared in that same interview with PEOPLE that she introduced Whitney Houston to Bobby Brown. Her story was a lot different from the one we know, where Houston and Brown first met at the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989. She claims that she formally introduced them.
“That was at a Harlem Nights party that Eddie Murphy had after the premiere of Harlem Nights. The film,” she said. “We were at the after-party, which was set up like a casino. She was standing there and we were watching somebody play blackjack. She came over and she said, ‘Introduce me to him.’ I said, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘You’re Whitney Houston! You can just go over.’ She says, ‘No. Take me over there.’ I knew Bobby and I took her over there. I said, ‘Bobby, this is Whitney.’”
Now, that didn’t work out all that well, as we know, but for the record, Harry made it clear that she only introduces people when “They ask me,” she doesn’t try and play matchmaker like that. She just so happens to have quite a few connections in Hollywood to make these love connections happen.
As for Union and Wade, while Harry thought it may have been love at first sight, Union told Glamour in 2014 that she was skeptical of him after he showed interest. Despite initial reservations and a bumpy road, we know they now have their happily ever after.
“When I met Dwyane, his “résumé” looked like crap: athlete, going through a divorce, nine years younger than me. None of that screamed, ‘Let’s have a lasting relationship,’” she said. “Then, after I had a heart-crushing breakup with yet another immature jerk, I thought, it can’t be any worse if I date a fetus. Let’s just see what happens. Turned out he’d been on his own since he was 15. He had wisdom that comes with facing an insane amount of adversity. He’s sweet, funny, honest about his shortcomings. When I put my preconceived notions to the side, I found someone cool.”

Tiffany Haddish Used To Secretly Record Her Auditions To Get Honest Feedback
Actress Tiffany Haddish has come a long way in Hollywood since her humble beginnings, and now she’s spilling the major keys that helped shape her career.
Haddish often wondered how casting agents felt when she came in for an audition, so she plotted to secretly record their conversations.
“You know what I’d do? I’d put my phone on voice memo and put it in my bag, I’d do the audition, walk out and leave my bag. Then I’d come back and be like, ‘Oh, I forgot my purse,’” she told a group of her comedienne peers, Maya Rudolph, Jane Fonda, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Alex Borstein, Regina Hall, and Natasha Lyonne for Hollywood Reporter.
The “Girl’s Trip” star would hear casting directors making comments such as, “‘She is not as urban as I thought she’d be.’ Or, ‘She is so ghetto.’ ‘Her boobs aren’t big enough.’ ‘I really think we should just go with a white girl,’” she remembered.
Haddish took the negative feedback and used it to finesse her own success. She understood their candid criticism was a way to hone in on and sharpen her skills.
“I want to hear so that I can write jokes about it. That and also so that I use it to my advantage and grow,” she revealed. “Like all this, ‘Jeez, she can’t read. She said every word wrong.’ And I’m like, ‘They’re right.’ So, I start reading out loud more and practicing and it helps me in the long run.”
It’s admirable that Haddish used the hating not to deter her, but to motivate her.

R. Kelly Hit With More Serious Sex Crime Charges That Can Put Him Away for 30 Years!
Looks like R. Kellys worst year ever just got taken up a notch!
The Cook County prosecutors in Chicago just filled new charges against Robert Kelly adding an additional 11 felony counts to the already filed charges! These new charges could carry a potential prison time of 30 years!
In January of 2010 the alleged offense happened but not many details are being shared about it at this time. What is being shared is the fact that the new case comes with four counts of aggravated criminal assault, two counts of aggravated criminal sex abuse, two counts of criminal sexual assault by force and if all that isn’t enough there is also three counts of aggravated criminal sex abuse with the victim is between the ages of 13-16 years old.
According to the Chicago-Sun Times, “The four aggravated criminal sexual assault counts are all designated as Class X felonies that carry a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison for Kelly if he is convicted. The four cases filed in February were charged as lower-level felonies that had maximum sentences of up to seven years.”
Kelly has been experiencing plenty of legal troubles this year after Lifetime aired the documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” causing a number of women to come forward saying that they were victims of sexual abuse from the singer. Kelly is currently out on $1 million dollar bond after being indicted in February with other sex crimes.

Entrepreneurs: There is One Benefit You Must Offer to Attract and Keep Top Employees
In multiple polls and reports, small businesses have cited finding, hiring, and keeping qualified workers among their biggest operating obstacles in recent years. To help divert that challenge, 19% of small businesses now are most likely to grant employees paid time off (PTO).
That perk leads the list of new benefits small businesses plan to offer for the first time in 2019, reveals a new survey from Clutch. Health benefits (15%) and retirement benefits (11%) are among other leading benefits smaller business plan to offer.
Small businesses should plan to expand their benefits offerings in 2019 given the competition from their rivals and the significant return on investment an effective benefits package provides, Clutch maintains. Providing the new benefits can help reduce employee turnover, the Washington, D.C.-based ratings and review firm reported.
All told, 56% of small businesses plan to offer new benefits to their employees in 2019. Clutch surveyed 529 small business owners or managers to learn about employee benefits plans for this year.
Around (11%) of small businesses are considering offering family leave, and 8% plan to introduce student loan repayment.
Benefits that will most effectively attract new job candidates and reduce turnover are perks small business should offer, Clutch says. Bethany Holliday, director of human resources for Cornerstone Insurance Group & Employer Solutions, explained in a news release that paying for benefits that retain employees is often less than the cost of recruiting and training new employees.
“The last thing you want [employees] to do is walk out the door,” she said. “It costs a whole lot less to keep people happy than it does to try and find new people.” Cornerstone Insurance Group & Employer Solutions is an employee benefit and business insurance firm.
Small businesses are more likely to lure and retain talent by designing their PTO policies with employees’ needs in mind. Holliday contends PTO is a perk that employees increasingly expect to earn immediately.
“We still have clients that are making employees wait an entire year before they’re eligible for any sort of PTO,” Holliday said. “I keep trying to transition [clients] out of that because that’s a very antiquated way of thinking.”
Companies with substandard or antiquated PTO policies will struggle to entice and retain top talent, Clutch reports. Some 45% of small businesses already offer employees PTO. However, Clutch claims not enough of small businesses are offering the perk.
So why are new benefits being provided? Thirty percent of small businesses offering new benefits are doing so to fulfill employee requests, while 27% are aiming to improve morale and keep workers. Just 13% of small businesses are issuing new benefits because they are required by law or as a direct result of union negotiations (9%).
“We kind of shifted from paying a lot to now offering a lot of benefits,” said Christopher Willatt, founder and owner of AlpineMaids, a home cleaning service, stated in a news release. “HR is really geared toward convincing our employees that this is a great job and doing everything to retain them.”
Interestingly, Clutch found that 30% of small businesses don’t have formalized HR resources, such as an in-house HR staff, outsourced HR functions, or a contract with an HR consultant.
Of firms without dedicated HR resources, only 10% offer benefits to their employees. In contrast, 64% of companies with HR resources offer benefits to their employees.
The bottom line is it’s critical that small businesses are ready to meet employee benefits requests to attract and retain a talented workforce, Clutch says.
Check out Clutch’s full report.

Army Vet To Face New Hate Crime Charges In California Crash
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Prosecutors will file new hate crime charges against a former Army sharpshooter accused of eight counts of attempted murder after he deliberately plowed his car into pedestrians at a California crosswalk last month, authorities said Thursday.
Two hate crime allegations will be filed against 34-year-old Isaiah Joel Peoples, a veteran of the Iraq war, Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office spokesman Sean Webby said.
Peoples’ mother said he has struggled with PTSD.
He showed no remorse after his car intentionally plowed at high speed into a group of people on April 24 in a crosswalk in the Silicon Valley suburb of Sunnyvale, then went on to hit a tree, police Chief Phan Ngo has said.
Evidence shows Peoples targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the Muslim faith, Ngo said
A 9-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were among those injured. The girl remains in a coma with brain trauma.
A hearing in the case was set for later Thursday in San Jose. He could enter a plea.
Family and friends described Peoples as quiet and polite and expressed shock at his involvement.
His mother, Leevell Peoples of Sacramento, said her son had “a bad episode” with PTSD in 2015, for which he was hospitalized, and has told her that he had been taking medication regularly since then.
She said she could not imagine any situation in which her son would deliberately crash into innocent people other than something related to the PTSD.
Peoples was honorably discharged from the Army, and police were investigating the PTSD report, Ngo said. Peoples had no criminal record.

Lonnie Bunch to Become the First African American to Lead the Smithsonian Institution
Lonnie G. Bunch, III, has been named the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian, making him both the first African American and historian to lead the world’s largest museum. The Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents announced on May 21 that Bunch will serve as the institution’s new leader, where he will oversee the organization’s 19 museums and complexes, along with the National Zoo. His appointment is effective June 16.
“I am humbled and honored to become the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution,” Bunch said in a press release. “I am excited to work with the Board of Regents and my colleagues throughout the Institution to build upon its legacy and to ensure that the Smithsonian will be even more relevant and more meaningful and reach more people in the future.”
Bunch is the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NAAMHC), which opened in September 2016 with a grand three-day ceremony that was attended by Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, the Obamas, and BLACK ENTERPRISE SVP/Editor-in-Chief Derek T. Dingle. The NAAMHC will begin a search for a successor.
“Lonnie Bunch guided, from concept to completion, the complex effort to build the premier museum celebrating African American achievements,” said U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, a Smithsonian Chancellor, in a statement. “I look forward to working with him as we approach the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary to increase its relevance and role as a beloved American institution and public trust.”
In an interview with SiriusXM Host Joe Madison, Bunch stated that the Smithsonian needs to focus on incorporating more diversity. “I hope just my presence signals it, but the Smithsonian needs to do a better job of diversity and inclusion. It’s got to make sure that all of the staff represents America; all the exhibitions represent the diversity of America; so I want to make sure that in essence, the Smithsonian becomes the model of what museums should be.”
Over the course of his three-decade career in the museum field, Bunch has become recognized as one of the nation’s leading figures in the historical and museum community. In addition to establishing the NAAMHC, he held director-level positions at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Air and Space and the National Museum of American History. The scholar is also the author of more than a dozen books on history, race, and museum scholarship.
Back in 2017, Bunch was honored at BE’s inaugural Black Men Xcel summit. During his acceptance speech, he paid homage to his ancestors and referenced “[black] men who were called boys, but they were called boys so that we could be called congressmen, CEO, president.”
Justin Key: A Limitless Mindset of Servant Leadership
BE Modern Man: Justin Key
Actor, author of Mind Control, entrepreneur and speaker, 34, Founder of Mindset Mgmt Group
Twitter: @JustinKey101; Instagram: @JustinKey101
As a child growing up, my imagination was limitless. Some people told me I needed to scale down on what I wanted to do and become. I thought to myself, if I’m created in the image of God, then why limit myself? That seemed disrespectful to the potential given to me. So I decided to adopt a limitless mindset to become everything I’ve always wanted. Currently, I’m cast in a new digital series produced by Google called God ComplX where I play a techie, and I use my degree in mathematics (and personality) to travel, educate, and encourage minority students on the benefits of STEM careers. I launched my consulting firm, Mindset Mgmt Group, to help other creatives and entrepreneurs excel in their careers, and instead of thinking outside of the box to get rid of the box altogether. Lastly, I published my first book, called Mind Control: Change The Way You Think So You Can Have A Limitless Life, to help inform others about how to have a limitless mindset as well.
HOW HAVE YOU TURNED STRUGGLE INTO SUCCESS?
I was raised on my grandparents’ farm in Tennessee, and lived in a two-bedroom trailer with my eight siblings. My mom worked tirelessly to provide for us and many times we went without because we did not have it and could not afford it. Instead of becoming bitter about the situation, I became the first in my family to graduate from college and then go on to get my masters. I now use my education, resources, and connections in Hollywood and business to provide resources to those in my hometown of Rossville, Tennessee, and Memphis as well as Los Angeles to create opportunities that I see are needed.
WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST MALE ROLE MODEL AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM HIM?
My greatest male role model was my granddad Simmie Rosser. He had to drop out of elementary school to work in the fields, and then later was drafted into the army. Granddad’s spirit never wavered. He would go on to start a family, buy property (that we still own to this day) and raise his children and grandchildren to be the best they could be despite economic and systematic circumstances. His relationship with God inspired mine; his love for education motivated me to go to college; and his gifted sense of numbers instilled in me a passion for mathematics — the subject in which I received my first degree.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
It’s the foundation of my limitless mindset: Never put limits on the grace that God has on your life.
WHAT PRACTICES, TOOLS, BOOKS, ETC. DO YOU RELY ON FOR SUCCESS?
I’m an avid reader and now a published author after being inspired by three books in particular. The three books that changed my life and altered the course of my success were: Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi, The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann, and The Entrepreneur Mind by Kevin D. Johnson. Two of the mental practices of a limitless mindset I consider law are: There is enough success for everyone and the Golden Rule, treat people the way you want to be treated.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE MANHOOD?
I define manhood as the pursuit of knowledge, character development and elevation of self to be the most effective servant-leader of family and the local and global community.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A BLACK MAN?
Is this a trick question? I love everything about being a Black man. Every day is like watching Marvel’s Black Panther in theaters for the very first time.
Community Gifts 76-Year-Old Volleyball Referee A Car After His Broke Down [Video]
A volleyball referee burst into happy tears when a group 10 teams and their families surprised him with a car and $2,000 in gift card donations.
Lemuel Buster, has been refereeing in Paulding County, Georgia with the recreation department since it opened last year. He walked out of the gym after a game earlier this month and was met with a crowd of cheering community members. The 76-year-old Veteran’s car broke down and since then he had been renting one to make sure he’d never miss a game.
“You guys are very important to me,” Buster can be heard saying in a video after accepting the generous gift. “Thank you.”
“He’s a good man,” said Leslie Ashworth, a mom of two whose 13-year-old plays on a team reffed by Buster. “He cares about the girls. He asks my daughter, ‘Hey, did your serve get better?’ He pays attention and actually enjoys it.”
Ashworth told GMA that upon finding out Buster’s car died she and other community members began collecting donations. One of the fathers who owns a used car lot donated a Chyrysler Sebring convertible to be gifted to Buster. Minor fixes were made to the vehicle so Buster wouldn’t have anything to worry about.
“We wanted to make sure he was taken care of,” Ashworth said.
“The whole experience,” Buster told GMA, “is a blessing, and I am very thankful and humble.”
The very first place Buster went in his new car was to church.

Family Receives $6.75 Million Settlement For Terrill Thomas, Who Died In Milwaukee Jail
Milwaukee County has paid nearly $7 million to the family of Terrill Thomas, who died of dehydration in his cell in 2016. This has been declared the largest jail death settlement in the history of the state of Wisconsin.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the settlement was initially proposed in January and that the payments of close to $5 million from the county and an additional $1.7 million from Armor Correctional Health Services, have been made.
The settlement is also one of the largest in the entire country, according to the Journal Sentinel.
“This settlement reflects not only the profound harm suffered by Mr. Thomas and his family, but also the shocking nature of the defendants’ misconduct in shutting off this man’s water and ignoring his obvious signs of distress as he literally died of thirst,” the family’s lawyers said in a statement.

In April 2016, during what’s believed to be a psychotic episode, Thomas was jailed after firing two rounds inside of the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. After he was jailed, the water to his cell was cut off and never restored. He was unable to communicate the severity of the problem due to his mental condition and was found dead in his cell seven days later.
Three employees at the jail were convicted of prisoner abuse charges while additional charges are pending against Armor Correctional Health Services, who were responsible for providing health care at the jail.
“I’ve been handling jail deaths for 20 years, and have yet to find one contract provider that doesn’t put its private profits ahead of inmates’ health,” Erik Heipt, one of the lawyers representing the Thomas family, said. “Anytime you privatize health care at a jail and expect different results, you’re probably not going to get the results you want.”
At the time of Thomas’ death the jail was being run by then-Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clark Jr., a known adversary of the Black Lives Matter movement. According to reports, under his watch, multiple deaths occurred.

Marcell Pickens Jr.: Photographer and Filmmaker Gives Entrepreneurs The Star Treatment
BE Modern Man: Marcell Pickens Jr.
Photographer and filmmaker, small business advocate, 37
Twitter: @TheFilmmarketer; Instagram: @TheFilmmarketer
A few years ago, I was inspired after reading about Black Wall Street and the level of success that African Americans were able to achieve in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Simultaneously, I became baffled by our inability to recreate the same level of success after almost 100 years. I immediately knew that I had to do my part but I didn’t know exactly how or by what means. I created Blachwood L.L.C., which pays homage to Black Wall Street by combining the Black Wall Street and Greenwood Ave [that community’s main thoroughfare] to serve as a reminder of the purpose of the company. Even after the name was established, I still didn’t know how to serve our community with maximum impact. I researched and found great movements that encouraged our community to buy black and keep black dollars circulating in our communities; however, I knew that wasn’t my lane.
For over 11 years I have practiced professional photography and commercial making for small and big businesses. As a small business photographer and filmmaker, or filmmarketer, I’ve shot hundreds of weddings and events and have created videos that helped small businesses grow their awareness and increase their profits. After seeing the impact my work was having toward the success of individuals and businesses, I realized my lane was with my talents. We then created the Blachwood Small Business Marketing Tour. This tour was designed to bring “Big Business” photography and video to small businesses at an affordable price. I fervently believe that one of the reasons small businesses in our community fail is because of a lack of exposure. With that being said, not many small businesses can afford $3,000 photo shoots and $5,000 commercials. The Blachwood tour gives small businesses in select cities access to necessary resources to help them get their message out there. We’ve designed an amazing package that includes both video and photography to really help catapult their businesses to another level. I’m extremely proud of the model and the impact it has had so far.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN LIFE?
I am most proud of my family: my wife of 12 years Evvett, two beautiful children Isabella Skye and Maxwell Cree and our golden doodle, Tucker. Success isn’t much without balance. My family unit represents balance, purpose, and legacy.
HOW HAVE YOU TURNED STRUGGLE INTO SUCCESS?
Honestly, I believe that one of my biggest struggles in life has been failing to listen to my inner spirit and following my own purpose early on. I remember being told in high school, “You are great in math; you should become an engineer.” For this very reason I decided to earn a mechanical engineering degree; all the while my heart leaned toward creativity.
In our community, we are taught to pursue high-paying careers regardless of our talents because it’s safe. Don’t get me wrong; this is sound advice, but the reality is that this type of advice stems from a history of struggle and is passed down from generation to generation. I struggled with the expectations of my elders and the direction my inner spirit was guiding me toward. I have since found peace in my experience as an engineer but have become alive in my experience as a photographer and filmmaker.
WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST MALE ROLE MODEL AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM HIM?
Dr. Decatur B. Rogers was the meanest man I had ever met, or so I thought. Dr. Rogers was the Dean and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Tennessee State University. It wasn’t until I began to do the impossible in my studies that I realized he wasn’t mean, but he understood that without hard work, dedication, and discipline, success was not attainable. Dr. Rogers demanded all of these traits out of me and ever since then, my commitment to success has been unstoppable.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE MANHOOD?
I define manhood as staying true to your responsibilities, standing strong in the face of adversity, being courageous during difficult moments, having the audacity to pursue your purpose, and finally accepting that the life you live is for the benefit of those who succeed you.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A BLACK MAN?
Society often perpetuates a negative image of black men. However, when a black man achieves a certain level of success, his accomplishments are resounding and undeniable. Although we often play by a different set of rules, I welcome the challenge of being an example to younger black men and proving that we are not who society says we are, and that our melanin is far more valuable than gold.
Proverbs 23:7 is one of my favorites: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” I meet so many men who begin to think and believe what society says about them, so they then become just that. I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to encourage anyone, specifically black men, reading this by declaring and affirming that you are more than your failures. Fail forward and never give up. Listen to your inner self, hone and perfect your craft and eventually, mountains will begin to move.
New Hampshire Repeals Its Death Penalty
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire is the latest state to repeal its death penalty, as the state Senate had enough votes to override Gov. Chris Sununu’s veto.
The repeal takes effect immediately.
The 16-8 vote Thursday was the necessary two-thirds majority to override. The House narrowly voted last week to override Sununu’s veto.
New Hampshire’s death penalty applied in only seven scenarios. The state hasn’t executed anyone since 1939, and there is only one inmate on death row. The repeal law does not apply retroactively to Michael Addison, who killed Manchester Police Officer Michael Briggs in 2006, but capital punishment supporters argued that courts might interpret it differently.
Sununu vetoed the bill last month at a community center named in honor of Briggs.

Computer Algorithm Helps Reopen Dozens Of Chicago Cold Cases
CHICAGO (AP) — The bodies turned up in some of Chicago’s most derelict places: alleys, abandoned buildings, weed-choked lots and garbage containers. The victims were mostly black women who had been strangled or suffocated.
Authorities believed many were prostitutes or drug addicts or both. There was evidence of sexual attacks, and some of the dead were naked or wearing torn clothes, as if someone had tried to rip them off.
The slayings that began in 2001 continued for years and remain unsolved. Now a national nonprofit group and a computer algorithm are helping detectives review the cases and revealing potential connections. The renewed investigation offers hope to the victims’ relatives, some of whom have waited nearly two decades for answers.
RELATED: Pregnant Teen Killed For Baby In Grisly Chicago Murder
“I say I’ve moved on from what happened, put it in God’s hands. But deep down I know I haven’t,” said Marsean Shines, a teenager when his aunt, Winifred Shines, was strangled and left in an alley almost 19 years ago. Family members have always wondered if she died at the hands of the same killer who choked the life out of other women they knew or heard about.
An arrest, Shines said, would help him move on and not be “held back like there’s a bungee cord that connects me to my auntie.”
The Murder Accountability Project, which analyzes homicides across the U.S., fed information about thousands of Chicago homicide victims and the way they died into a computer, which ultimately spit out 51 strikingly similar cases involving women whose bodies were found in some of the poorest pockets of the city.
“When you put the narratives together … it just screams serial killer,” said Thomas Hargrove, the founder of the project who presented his findings to police in 2017.
RELATED: Incoming Chicago Mayor Has Path To Historic Police Reforms
Hargrove’s group has made similar efforts elsewhere. In 2010, it analyzed a pattern of 15 unsolved strangulations of women in Indiana. Four years later, a man in Gary confessed to killing seven of them. In Cleveland, the group’s data led police to create a task force to examine whether a serial killer or killers were responsible for the deaths of as many as 60 women.
Detectives in Chicago started the investigation under pressure from activists. They are now reassessing the reports and evidence in each of the deaths, looking for links that went unnoticed in the original probes as well as any new clues. At the same time, Rep. Bobby Rush, in whose district many of the killings occurred, has asked the FBI to join the investigation and plans a community meeting to warn about the risk of a serial killer.
So far, police have not reported any breakthroughs or any firm connections between the slayings. In 21 killings where DNA evidence was recovered, the genetic evidence belonged to 21 different people.
The man overseeing the six detectives assigned to the slayings said he does not believe there are “one or two bad guys traveling the city,” preying on women.
The idea of an assailant who is “skipping the white prostitutes to kill the black ones, that doesn’t make sense,” Deputy Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said.
SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER:
Still, he would not be surprised if the investigation concluded that “there were multiple bad guys that did more than one,” or if other evidence emerged that expanded the number of investigations beyond 51.
Another mystery is the way the killings stopped in February 2014, with the discovery of Diamond Turner’s body in a garbage can, and did not start again until June 2017, with the death of Catherine Saterfield-Buchanan.
“Maybe this guy was in prison,” said Greg Greer, a Chicago minister and founder of Freedom First international, a human rights organization.
The Murder Accountability Project has urged police to look for “a guy not available to murder women in Chicago during those three years,” Hargrove said. “We think that could explain the hiatus. And now he’s back, or they’re back, out there.”
RELATED: Chicago Police Caught On Camera Punching Female High School Student
Also looming over the investigation is the concern that the victims were the kind of people whose deaths normally warrant nothing more than a few lines in a newspaper, if that.
“I think about how my cousin was in a dumpster and nobody found her for two weeks,” said Riccardo Holyfield, whose cousin, Reo Renee Holyfield, died last fall. “How can a body sit in a dumpster for so long in a well-traveled alleyway?”
Greer suggested the answer is tied to both who these victims were and where they died.
“A lot of times poor, urban communities don’t get the same amount of services that wealthy communities do, that’s a common fact,” Greer said.
RELATED: 4 Adults, 2 Kids Shot And Wounded At Chicago Baby Shower
Deenihan disagreed. “There’s a group of people out there who think that because of lifestyle these investigations don’t get the attention they deserve (but) that’s not the case,” he said.
As intriguing as the talk of a serial killer might be, authorities may find that the common theme of the cases is the victims themselves, not who killed them.
“You’re talking about a high-risk lifestyle,” he said, explaining that people who work as prostitutes “may be getting into 20 different cars a night … and sharing drugs with people they don’t really know.”
Shines acknowledges that his aunt was addicted to crack cocaine and could have been having sex in exchange for drugs or money to buy drugs with the different men he saw coming in and out of her home.
Once the detectives read all the cases, they will get together as a team to discuss them, Deenihan said.
“What happens is one guy might say, ‘You had a red SUV'” in your report? “I had one in mine,'” he said.
There is hope on another front. Chicago police, like other law enforcement agencies, submit DNA evidence to a national database in the hopes that it will return a name. The problem is that if someone doesn’t have a conviction, that person’s DNA would not be in the system.

But Deenihan said samples from unsolved homicides are submitted regularly so that if any of those people are ever convicted of a crime, police will have a name to go with one of the DNA samples found at the scene of a strangulation.
That gives Winifred Shines’ family hope. Her son, Bryant, recently started seeing a therapist to deal with his longtime grief.
“I’m not at peace because he’s still out there,” he said, referring to his mother’s killer. “And it may be someone we know.”

Gun-Toting White Woman Fired By Mississippi Campground After Threatening Black Couple On Camera [Watch]
Kampgrounds of America, a chain that oversees hundreds of commercial campgrounds nationwide, has confirmed that the property manager for the Starkville location in Mississippi has been fired after she threatened a black couple with a gun because they did not have a reservation.
On Tuesday, spokesman Mike Gast told The Associated Press that the unidentified white woman was no longer employed with the company, adding that Kampgrounds of America “does not condone the use of a firearm in any manner.”
Jessica Richardson shared video on Facebook of she and her husband’s tense moment with the rabid, gun-toting white woman. In the caption, Jessica explained how they were trying to enjoy a picnic with their dog by Oktibbeha County Lake when the former manager confronted them.
Sgt. Franklin Richardson had just returned from a 9-month deployment in the Middle East when he and his wife Jennifer went for a holiday picnic at a Kampgrounds of America in Mississippi. Then this white woman pulled a gun on them: “You don’t belong here.”pic.twitter.com/1DMksZH2tG
— Keith Boykin (@keithboykin) May 29, 2019
The couple reportedly received permission from the reception office to spend the day by the nearby lake without having a reservation to the campground, MSN reports.
However, soon after they started walking, Richardson and her husband were approached by an elderly white female, who pulled up next to them in her truck, got out her vehicle and brandished her firearm. After learning the couple did not have a reservation, she ordered them to leave the campsite.
In the video, Richardson can be heard saying: “This lady just pulled a gun because we [are] out here and don’t have reservations. The only thing you had to tell us was to leave, we would have left. You didn’t have to pull a gun.”
The woman responds, “Well I’m just telling you you need to leave because it’s under private ownership,” she said before putting the gun away. “You can’t be out here.”
Jessica’s husband, Franklin, a sergeant in the Army National Guard, had recently returned from a nine-month deployment in the Middle East, according to WCBI.
“It’s kind of crazy,” he told the station. “You go over there and don’t have a gun pointed at you, and you come back home and the first thing that happens is you have a gun pointed at you.”
Shortly after the video was posted on Facebook, Kampgrounds of America issued the following statement:
“Kampgrounds of America is currently looking into the matter and reaching out to all of the parties involved,” it said in a statement. “Kampgrounds of America prides itself on providing a welcoming, safe environment for everyone to enjoy the outdoors.”

Quanell X On Maleah Davis’ Mom: ‘She Knows What Happened’
Maleah Davis’ mom’s biggest supporter, activist Quanell X, is now telling authorities that he believes Brittany Bowens knows what happened to her missing daughter.
“I don’t think she knows where Maleah is, but I do believe she knows what happened,” he told KHOU 11.

Quanell X told the station that Brittany Bowens told him she communicated with Derion Vence, Maleah’s stepfather and suspect in her disappearance. She also reportedly shared details so sensitive, he shared them only with prosecutors.
“(She) said to me when we (were) riding in my car what she believed really happened to Maleah,” he said. “At that point, I knew what needed to be done. So I arranged to meet as quickly as I could with investigators at the highest level of this case and shared everything that we had learned and discovered.”
Quanell X told the Houston news station that after just two days on the job, he saw red flags. The activist claimed sources in Bowens’ family told him troubling details about Maleah’s care.

“Ain’t no way in hell a parent with common sense would have handled this entire situation the way Brittany handled this entire situation,” Quanell X said.
He claims that Bowens behaved differently in private than she did in front of the camera. To the public she was an emotional mother.
In private he says, “there was not a lot of tears,” he continued. “She was always calm, fluid, clear. Now whenever there was a public thing, she would always break down.”

He claims he hung around in hopes to get information that the police could not.
KHOU 11 attempted to speak with Bowens but she did not respond.
Quanell X did tell prosecutors about Bowens’ words, behavior and shared his suspicions, law enforcement sources confirmed. However, authorities are still vetting the information.
The activist does not believe Bowens knows where to find Maleah. However, he is bothered by other details she shared with him.
