House candidate condemned for racist videos wins Republican primary

Marjorie Taylor Greene has won the GOP nomination for a heavily Republican congressional seat in Georgia despite widespread condemnation from party leaders over her racist and Islamophobic videos.

Greene, who has also expressed support for elements of the QAnon conspiracy theory, defeated John Cowan in a primary runoff election on Tuesday and will be the heavy favorite in the November general election against Democrat Kevin Van Ausdal.

Greene was the first-place finisher in the June primary for the open seat in Northwest Georgia. But a week after the primary, POLITICO reported that she had made Facebook videos in which she disparaged Blacks, Muslims and Jewish Democratic megadonor George Soros. GOP leaders including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) and Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), who chairs the House Republican campaign arm, denounced her comments.

But to the consternation of some House Republicans, neither McCarthy nor the National Republican Congressional Committee took sides in the runoff. Among leadership, only House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (La.) actively worked on Cowan’s behalf.
